2017 Starts with a Bang

By Uncategorized No Comments

The new year has just started and we have two players already shoot 59!  First Justin Thomas at the Sony Open in Hawaii, then Adam Hadwin at the CareerBuilders in Palm Springs.  I have been a Justin Thomas fan since he first appeared on the tour.  How can you not be for the player that pound for pound is the longest on the PGA Tour.  Well, he wins the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, the SBS Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, and then the Sony Classic also in Hawaii.  That is 3 out of 5 PGA Tour Events.  It is nice to have another young player in the mix and I really enjoyed Jordan Spieth and Daniel Burgers reaction to Justin making the putt for 59!

Next on the schedule is to watch how Tiger Woods does at Torrey Pines this week?

Family atmosphere evident at golf academy

When asked what role golf plays in his family’s life, Kip Puterbaugh paused a few seconds before yelling out the question to one of his sons hitting balls in a bay at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad.

“Water, food, golf,” quipped Jamie Puterbaugh, one of two sons Kip teaches with at the Kip Puterbaugh Aviara Golf Academy.

“Yep. It is a big part of our life,” Kip responded in what apparently qualifies as an understatement. “We never really planned on any of our sons teaching with me, but it’s pretty special that they do.”

In a sign that business and pleasure can mix, Kip, Jamie and Jason Puterbaugh are among the teachers at Aviara, where Kip has spent nearly 30 of his 44 years as a golf instructor. Along the way he has received several regional and national accolades that include being a fixture in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers list since it first appeared in 1996.

Will Bryson Dechambeau’s clubs become the new secret?

by Tod Leonard, The San Diego Union-Tribune

Golf is an enormously derivative game.

One club manufacturer inserts moveable weights into a driver and a bunch of companies follow. One player starts having success with a particular putting method and he’s inundated with questions around the practice putting green.

So what are we to make of the arrival and success of Bryson DeChambeau and his one-plane swing and single-length clubs? Are we on the verge of a golf revolution that will see weekend golfers flock to DeChambeau’s methods, or are we just settling in to watch one very unique guy’s journey?

We know this: DeChambeau has our attention. When he won both the NCAA and U.S. Amateur championships last year, he put himself into an elite group. Only four others had captured those titles in the same year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

By Uncategorized No Comments

It is 10 days till Christmas and the year 2016 is right around the corner.  I hope that you all have a Great Christmas and Santa brings you the opportunity to play a lot of golf for 2016.  If you make the decision that you want to play “better golf”, we hope that you will visit us at The Aviara Golf Academy.  We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary, and it doesn’t seem possible that we have been here that long.  As for the state of the game and my wishes for the year of golf ahead of us, here is my wish list.  I hope that Jordan Spieth wins another Major.  I would also like Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy win a major.  That leaves one major open that either Jason Day, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka or Dustin Johnson will win.  Check back with me in a year and see how I did!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
